featuring Dawn Upshaw, soprano
with Orquesta Los Pelegrinos
The incomparable Dawn Upshaw sings Ayre by Osvaldo Golijov composer of La Pasión según San Marcos, Ainadamar, and winner of the 2003 MacArthur ("Genius") Award. Commissioned by Carnegie Hall at the request of superstar soprano Upshaw, Golijov's Ayre is a must-see musical event in which she gives voice to tales of love and war, and religion and rage, primarily from 15th-century Spain. Scored for clarinet, French horn, hyper-accordion, guitar, harp, flute, viola, cello, double bass, and laptop computer, Ayre's instrumentation is as eclectic as its languages. Representing the three prominent cultures in the country at the time (Christian, Jewish, and Arab), Golijov's music is an ecstatically beautiful mix of Spanish and Mediterranean influences and reflects a range of human conditions and emotions rising from the cultural clash and mesh of the time. "Golijov is fast becoming one of the most important composers for voice todayand Upshaw is both his perfect muse and prophet" (Boston Herald).
