Pina Bausch Tanztheater Wuppertal
Ten Chi

0

Perhaps no other European dance artist has remained as influential and controversial as German choreographer Pina Bausch. A seminal figure in the performing arts, she is widely praised for her epic, bittersweet meditations on the human condition in productions that blend idiosyncratic movement, speech, song, brilliant visual images, and astonishing sets. In recent seasons, Bausch has left Germany to create a series of what might be called choreographic travelogues—works of genuine artistic substance that are deeply informed and inspired by the countries and regions where they are created. Now "the undisputed Queen of European dance theater" (The Times, London) returns to Berkeley with performances of the poetic Ten Chi, created in Japan in 2004. On a stage decorated with cherry blossoms and whale fins, the skilled dancers of Tanztheater Wuppertal explore with empathy and humor the sounds, sights, joys, and paradoxes of modern Japanese culture.
