Irvin Mayfield and the
New Orleans Jazz Orchestra
Do You Know What it Means?

0

Painting a vivid musical portrait of the spirit that was and is New Orleans, the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra is rightly praised for programs celebrating the colorful musical legacies of the Crescent City. The group is directed by Irvin Mayfield, official Cultural Ambassador of the City of New Orleans and the latest in a long line of brilliant Louisiana trumpeters. His 16-member ensemble is now touring the country to rave reviews ("infectious, toe-tapping, brassy, and sassy," says one critic) and has become a cultural beacon for a troubled city in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Its red-hot Do You Know What It Means? program ranges far and wide—featuring jazz, blues, swing, and spirituals—and honors the rich cultural traditions of a place where history swings in everyday modern life.
