Chicago-based jazz musician Patricia Barber has earned a reputation as a fiercely independent artist, exploring the improvisational terrain beyond classic balladry and bop-infused standards. She was recently awarded a prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship Award for Composition and the result is her brilliant song cycle entitled Mythologies, a series of character portraits drawn from the timeless stories of Ovid's Metamorphoses. "The most fearless, most intellectually stimulating and, by extension, most interesting singer-songwriter-pianist on the American jazz scene," says JazzTimes.
