Hugh Masekela's Chissa All-Stars
featuring Hugh Masekela, trumpet

Hugh Masekela, South Africa's legendary Afropop jazz ambassador, arrives in Berkeley with a dynamic lineup of artists from Chissa Records, the company he founded recently to develop original South African talent. One of the earliest leaders in the world fusion mode, Masekela surprised everyone in 1968 with his smash hit "Grazing in the Grass" (which sold four million copies). Since then, he has pursued his own blend of South African music, R&B, jazz, and blues, today even adding urban soul and hip-hop to the mix. Masekela has journeyed far from the impoverished townships of his homeland, and along the way he has earned legions of fans, playing with such luminaries as Harry Belafonte, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, and Paul Simon.
