Richard Tognetti, artistic director & leader
with Andreas Scholl, countertenor
The Australian Chamber Orchestra was founded in 1975 and boldly represents that country's vibrant, adventurous, and inquiring spirit. Virtually unmatched in its provocative expansion of the chamber orchestra repertoire, the group commands a stylistic versatility that allows it to perform on modern or period instruments and as a chamber group, small orchestra, or electro-acoustic collective. The ensemble appears in Berkeley with gifted countertenor Andreas Scholl, whose cultured voice has commanded attention and praise in the world's great concert halls. "Astonishingly warm, fullbodied, and tightly focused...you'd have to scour the universe hard to find another band like the ACO" (The Times, London).
Program: Haydn/Symphony No. 44 in E Minor, (Trauer); Handel/selected arias; Smalley/Footwork (U.S. Premiere performances); Haas (arr. Tognetti)/From the Monkey Mountains Suite
