Wynton Marsalis &
the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra

The peerless and ever-popular Wynton Marsalis hits the stage with the ensemble he has forged into an international sensation. Hailed as an extraordinarily versatile orchestra and "the finest big band in the world today" (The Daily Telegraph, London), the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra is composed of an array of jazz music's leading soloists. Under Marsalis' inspired direction and drawing from original compositions by members of the orchestra as well as the masterworks of Ellington, Mingus, Coltrane, and other great composers, Marsalis' concerts with the JLCO have fast become the standard against which memorable big band jazz performances are judged.

Key Notes Series: Jazz & World Music
Tue, Sept 22, 5-6:15 pm
Zellerbach Hall Lobby Mezzanine

The late 20th century cultural dynamics that coalesced into Barack Obama's 2008 election as the first African American president of the United States are paralleled in jazz through the career and contributions of Wynton Marsalis, the visionary New Orleans trumpeter, composer, scholar and musical director of Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Chuy Varela discusses jazz and culture with radio colleague Clifford Brown Jr., bassist Marcus Shelby, and Jazzschool founder and director Susan Muscarella, starting with how Wynton Marsalis has brought the big band sound forward into the 21st century. While Key Notes lectures are free and open to the public, tickets must be purchased for the associated concerts. For a listing of all Education and Community events, please see our 2009/10 Calendar
