Named Moscow's top orchestra in a Gramophone magazine poll of international music critics, the Russian National Orchestra has been the toast of the music world ever since its first concert in Moscow in 1990. Of the group's debut at the BBC Proms in London, the Evening Standard wrote, "They played with such captivating beauty that the audience gave an involuntary sigh of pleasure." Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the orchestra returns to Cal Performances for a concert featuring founder Mikhail Pletnev conducting Shostakovich's Symphony No. 9, Tchaikovsky's beloved Violin Concerto, with violinist Stefan Jackiw, and Pletnev's own song cycle, based on three poems by William Butler Yeats, featuring soprano Lisa Delan.
Please note early curtain time.
